How New South Wales' price behaves

New South Wales has the largest demand in the National Electricity Market, centred on Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong. Its supply has long been anchored by large black coal stations, with hydro from the Snowy Scheme, gas peakers and a fast-growing fleet of solar, wind and batteries. Because demand is high and the coal fleet is ageing, New South Wales tends to have higher average prices and far fewer negative-price hours than South Australia, Victoria or Tasmania.

Price spikes in New South Wales usually come on hot afternoons and evenings, when air conditioning drives demand up and an unplanned outage at a large unit leaves the region short. On those days the price can reach the market price cap for several intervals.

Interconnectors

New South Wales sits in the middle of the NEM. It imports from Queensland through QNI and Terranora, and trades with Victoria through the Victoria–New South Wales Interconnector. It is frequently a net importer, which means its price is often set by what neighbouring regions can send in.

Renewable energy zones

The state's Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap is building renewable energy zones in Central-West Orana, New England, the South West, Hunter-Central Coast and Illawarra, each with new transmission and an access scheme that limits how much generation connects. For a developer, the zone, the access rights and the marginal loss factor at the connection point matter as much as the price on this page. See MLF and curtailment risk for why.
